5 Reasons to Celebrate Spanish (Bilingüe)

Happy World Spanish Language Day! This official yearly celebration of Spanish language and literature began on October 12, 1926 in Valencia, Spain (commemorating the date of Columbus’ arrival in the Americas). Writer Vicente Andrés began the event to celebrate Spanish literature. As the years passed, all of Spain commemorated this day. Latin American countries joined the party in 1964. The UN changed the date to April 23, in honor of Cervantes’ death (1616) and to separate it from the Columbus controversy of the 12 October date.

  1. Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world, after Chinese.
  2. There are 22 countries where Spanish is the official language.
  3. 442 million people worldwide hablan español as native speakers.
  4. Cervantes’ Don Quijote de la Mancha is second only to the Bible in number of copies sold.
  5. Spanish is spoken by 50 million people in the United States. That is the second largest population of hispanohablantes in the world (after Mexico).

Spanish Haiku Contest

Whether you are learning Spanish or have spoken it your whole life, let’s play around with the simple yet profound form; Haiku. That’s three lines: 5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables.

An example I wrote is:

Mi boca fresca    [My mouth feels so fresh]
llena de primavera  [as if inside it were spring]
el castellano.   [when I speak Spanish]

¡5 Razones para celebrar el castellano!

¡Feliz día de la lengua castellana! Esta celebración mundial de la literatura y el idioma comenzó el 12 octubre 1926 en Valencia, España. El escritor Vicente Andrés formó el evento para conmemorar la literatura en español. Tras los años, todo España festejaba el día. Los países latinoamericanos se juntaron a la fiesta en 1964. La ONU cambió la fecha al 23 abril para honrar la fecha de la muerte de Cervantes (1616) y para separarlo de la controversia de Columbus de la fecha 12 octubre.

5 Hechos asombrosos

  1. En el mundo el castellano/el español es el segundo idioma más hablado después del chino.
  2. Hay 22 países donde el español es el idioma oficial.
  3. 442 millones de personas en el mundo hablan español como hablantes nativos.
  4. El libro de Cervantes, Don Quijote de la Mancha solo esta en segundo lugar de libro más vendido en el mundo a la Sagrada Biblia.
  5. El castellano se habla por 50 millones de personas en los Estados Unidos de América. En tamaño en el mundo, esta población de hispanohablantes es segundo solo a México.

Haiku en español

Algunos son principiantes, otros han hablado el castellano durante toda la vida. Juguemos con la forma simple pero profunda; el Haiku. Son tres líneas: 5 sílabas, 7 sílabas, 5 sílabas. Escoge un tema relacionado con la cultura, el idioma o los libros en español. Ejemplo mío del haiku:

Mi boca fresca   
llena de primavera
el castellano. 

Ahora, ¡escribe tu un poema haiku por favor! El sentimiento cuenta por más que la perfección. Entonces, cópialo a los comentarios abajo. Anunciaré los ganadores y los publicaré el martes que viene. Ahora, sí puedes. Vaya, son tres líneas no más… : )

  1. Venga! Me parece muy apropiado responder en castellano, ya que es la lengua que estas celebrando, Rebecca y eso es cosa que me alegra mucho…bueno, nosotros hablamos valenciano y castellano aqui en Valencia y claro, el valenciano es un catalan adaptado a nuestro Pais Valencia…te felicito, enhorabuena!
    Venga, aqui va mi Haiku en castellano:

    De mi ordenador
    Al coche de mi padre
    Cielos blancos sol

    Vale, nunca habia hecho algo asi, pero no me detengo ante un desafio 🙂

  3. I recommend Duolingo. A friend has become quite fluent in Spanish with its help and is now learning Portuguese. You do have to stick with it though. I’m afraid my Swedish fell by the wayside. I wanted to understand what my son-in-law was saying to the grandchildren in that family.

    1. Yes, there’s a day for each of the 6 official UN languages. As for speaking, order take out food from a Mexican restaurant perhaps? Or set up a language exchange where you talk on the phone:)
