Ready to celebrate? Say, what is behind this US holiday, beyond a windfall for bars and restaurants with a liquor license? (every year except this one, sorry) Since 1863, Californios (people of Spanish descent who resided in California since 1683) have made today a fiesta with traditional music and dancing. We can thank the Chicano movement for this day of Mexican heritage pride.
What is the festival about? Many North Americans believe the rumor that May 5th is Mexican Independence Day, but, Independence came September 16th of 1810 for our neighbor to the south. To find out the inspiring story behind 5 Mayo, see my earlier post.
Do you observe Cinco de Mayo? Grab your favorite festive beverage and give a hearty ¡Viva México!

Lovely post Rebecca. I was wondering what that festivity was all about as when I visited Mexico I asked and no one knew what this 5 de mayo was all about. 😊 Thank you for the clarification and a great post!
