Who’s the Ant, Who the Flower?

I see the world through a social lens, especially right now. Does this photo represent symbiosis, mutualism or parasitism? Would the flower open on its own? Scientists say that despite common wisdom the bud does not need the insect to bloom.

The ants use the nectar at the base of the bud for food. In exchange, the ants defend the peony from other insects that might eat it. Botanists define this as mutualism.

In these challenging times, what can we do to nourish and protect each other? Today, are you an ant or a flower?

This coming week I will take a short summer break. I will resume posting next Saturday, in July. Gracias for reading Fake Flamenco! I appreciate your comments! ¡Olé! –Rebecca

  1. You know, there are charming misconceptions (like the one about ants and peonies) that one hates to give up. But since I probably should oppose “fake news” even when it’s charming, I will pass along your more-scientific information.
