I see the world through a social lens, especially right now. Does this photo represent symbiosis, mutualism or parasitism? Would the flower open on its own? Scientists say that despite common wisdom the bud does not need the insect to bloom.
The ants use the nectar at the base of the bud for food. In exchange, the ants defend the peony from other insects that might eat it. Botanists define this as mutualism.
In these challenging times, what can we do to nourish and protect each other? Today, are you an ant or a flower?

One day at a time. Too hot for racing around. A jazz concert by the waterfront tonight (first since Covid) and some beach time. Nothing too strenuous 🙂 🙂
