Miriam Jiménez Román on Afro-Latin@ History

A great woman has passed. Thanks to Repeated Islands for sharing details of her life. “Remezcla listed her as one of 8 Afro Latinos Who Made Important Contributions to US History. “

When she was growing up, people from the Caribbean were categorized either as Latino or Black in the US, not both. There was a whole Afro-Latin culture and history that was ignored. Miriam Jiménez Román sought to change that and brought that missing piece to national attention.

Her scholarship, especially in editing the The Afro-Latin@ Reader brought focus on an important but previously invisible community. I have a copy of the book on order and will report back here to Fake Flamenco when I have perused its depths.

Gracias for visiting Fake Flamenco! I appreciate your comments. ¡Olé! –Rebecca
