5 Vegetable Seedlings Pop Into the Garden

Just 10 days ago, my parents visited for the first time in over a year. We had fun and we did quite a bit of gardening! My parents, Eagle and I weeded and planted three vegetables and two fruits in our garden beds; beans, squash, chard, cucumber and melon. We’ve had tons of rain alternating with bright sun in the days since. Today, seedlings of each kind are present and accounted for!

P.S. There’s zucchini too, but I forgot to take its photo!

  1. I’m hard-pressed to choose my favorite vegetable. I seem to like all of them. I guess I’ll say squash. I’m envious of your garden. I had a garden for many years and enjoyed it immensely until our are was taken over by deer and raccoons. I tried every trick to try to keep the deer out, but nothing worked. The last year I planted a garden, the deer ate all the plants. Who knew they would eat tough okra stalks and tomato plants? Where I planted okra, when the deer got through it looked like I’d planted a row of sticks! That same summer, raccoons had a drunken party in the corn one night. The next morning it looked like someone had driven a bulldozer through the corn. That was the summer I decided all the expense, time, and energy it took to have a garden was too high a price to pay for six radishes. Yes, after planting radishes, squash, beans, bell peppers, okra, cucumbers, and corn, all we got out of the garden was six radishes! That’s when I started just going to the local farmers market. Oh, how I miss having a garden!

    1. Janet, thanks for gardening story. Sorry it didn’t have a happy ending! A very high price for six radishes. Darn deer and renegade raccoons. For us it is the squirrels, the bunnies and the groundhog that munch on our crops. We have wire mesh covers on some plants like melons and chard that are irresistible. Once the zucchini are bushy the prickly leaves keep most animals away…

  2. For the first time, I’m trying to grow basil from seeds. Out of what seems to be over 100 seeds, I may be lucky enough to have three good basil plants. But oh, my how fun it’s been to watch them come up! Yours look great, especially the beans. Nature makes us smile again!

  6. Nice, you have a green thumb! I don’t grow anything, nor do I have plants, but gardening looks to be a fun time, both therapeutic and a great way to bond with family. Can’t wait to see the progress of your vegetables growing!

  10. Hurrah! I am growing the same, with the exception of melon. A bit worried right now, however, since it is so cold here I’m thinking the cuke seeds might rot…..I have extra, though! 😉

      3. Yup..I planted my seeds just before three days of rainy weather in the 40s last week. I think I’m going to have to plant again, or buy some tomato plants. ;-(

  12. I love vegetables, could live in salads. For some reason my favorite vegetables begin with vowels – artichoke, asparagus, avocado, eggplant, onions, and okra. (and olives, if those count as vegetables.) (I know avocados are technically fruit, but they’re green, so … 😉 )
