1 Little Snakey Snake by the Lakey Lake

In Minnesota, I’ve seen garter snakes in the woods that looked a lot like green water hoses. Here in Wisconsin, I saw the cutest little snake slithering across the parking lot just as we were leaving Governor Nelson State Park Sunday. It wasn’t green, but dark gray and brown striped.

I looked it up, it’s a Eastern ribbon snake, a species of garter snake. Garter snakes are not poisonous. Eastern ribbon snakes live by the water and eat frogs, fish and invertebrates like spiders and worms. Interestingly, they are ovoviviparous, giving birth in late summer to 4 to 27 live young! That makes this critter about three months old. It was in a hurry to get across the parking lot, smart snake.

Are there friendly non-venomous snakes where you live?

¡Olé! and gracias for visiting. Please say hello and leave a note below. –Rebecca

    1. Thanks for your comments, Kelly. I’ve heard about those pesky boa constrictors, pets loosed into the wild with major consequences for little animals. I think there’s a long standing dispute between humans and snakes! Not many people like them.

  1. Your song is quite similar to an old country song called “Sneaky Snake” by Tom T. Hall. It’s good for a laugh if you haven’t heard it before. Saludos.

  2. I cannot help it, it’s always a pleasure to know when another sees the cuteness and beauty in a snake or any reptile. Thank you for sharing this, as well as the neat fact about Garter snakes. They are all often unappreciated beings in this world. There is more in these beings in intelligence and emotion, than many will bother to contemplate.
