Time for the monthly poetry challenge. In November, we’ll write Japanese tanka poetry with a celestial theme: solar system, galaxy, dark matter, stars, planets, sun, whichever opens your eyes in wonder. The format of a tanka is five lines; the number of syllables is 5, 7, 5, 7 then 7 again.

Polvo celestial
5 El cielo parece lejos
7 Es algo inalcanzable
5 Como hormiga ando
7 Desconociendo mi ser
7 Hecho de estrellas está
–Rebecca Cuningham, 6 noviembre 2021
Translation: Celestial Dust
5 The heavens seem far
7 Completely unreachable
5 I walk like an ant
7 Without knowing my being
7 Is made of the stars themselves

I’m all about the moon, stars, and galaxy…and poetry! I haven’t written poetry in a minute, so I’ll have to return to it soon. Thanks for sharing yours!

Thank you. Great, I hope that you will join us, writing verse about a subject that you love. Tanka is fun. It feels freer than rhyming poetry, yet has enough structure to channel the writer’s thoughts into meaningful lines.

Counting syllables can be fun. I literally say the verse out loud and count on my fingers!

Hello Rebecca,
Here is my little tanka contribution to you wonderful heavens and galaxy prompt:
how high the heart soars
beyond events horizon
when hope’s magic
eclipses the heavens in
a November beaver moon

The line breaks did not show up in the comments. Just reposting my tanka so that you can see the breaks:
how high the heart soars/
beyond events horizon/
when hope’s magic/
eclipses the heavens in/
a November beaver moon.

Oh bother! I must get my effort in today as tomorrow’s super-busy. Sorry, no time to incorporate it into a blog post. I’ve struggled with this – mood change in the third line and all that. But you force me out of my comfort zone and I really appreciate that, Rebecca. It’s the best way to learn, and I’m definitely going to persist.
A meeting – going out.
I’ve got my coat, my bag, notes.
But wait. Above me
glows the moon, a perfect globe
in a black sky, girdled by stars.

Neutron stars collide,
gravitational waves wash
over the cosmos
while a Goldilocks planet
watches in childlike wonder
