Time for our March Poetry Challenge at Fake Flamenco! In February, we had a wonderful celebration of friendship with pareado poems. This month we’ll use a form called Shadorma. I read a rumor that it has Spanish origin, but the sh sound is not common en español. Sounds like romantic fiction to me. What is true, is that Shadorma is six lines, no rhyme, with quite a specific syllable count: 3/5/3/3/7/5. Short, but you may be surprised what you can say in 26 syllables. The March theme is light and darkness.
Shadorma of Light
The headlights
of the Russian jeep
burnt out last
night at 3
Cold soldier, 4K from Kyiv
White flag for hot tea.
–Rebecca Cuningham, 7 March 2022
Shadorma de luz
Los faros
del camión ruso

frío, 4K de Kyiv
Rendirse por té.
–Rebecca Cuningham (traducción), 7 marzo 2022
Note: My poem is inspired by a true story of a Russian soldier who surrendered to Ukranians this month and was given hot tea and cookies.

I’ve been thinking about this on and off since you dropped hints about this challenge. Darkness seems more where things are at just now, but your poem has found light in the darkness: I hadn’t heard this anecdote, but you’ve turned it into a lovely and meaningful shadarma. You’ve set the bar high!

A SMALL FLAME
She walked in,
lit a small candle
then she left
and we watched
as the light grew still stronger
lighting freedom’s path.

Such a positive take on darkness and light in these rather dark times, which makes great use of the Shadorma form.

Thanks for the ying and yang, Britta, the light and darkness. Love your lively poems. I’ll include at least one next week. The challenge is to pick just one of the two!

Hello Sadje, appreciate your Shadorma poem! The syllable count looked perfect to me. I like how you’ve written it like a prayer.

Thanks Rebecca. I watched a video on how to count syllables! 😂

Thanks for the chuckle, Sadje! I love imaging the scene. 🙂 My school teacher taught me to place my hand under my chin, when the chin goes down, that’s a syllable.
