Tuesday’s announcement by the US Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden is welcome good news. She chose Ada Limón as the 24th US poet laureate. Limón’s tenure begins September 29, 2022 with a poetry reading in the Coolidge Auditorium in Washington DC.
Limón has an MFA from NYU, has published six books of poetry and hosted the podcast The Slowdown. Born in California (1976), she is currently living in Kentucky and teaching poetry for Queens University of Charlotte low residency program. Limón is the first Mexican-American and Latina woman US Poet Laureate.
She has won numerous awards, including the National Book Critics Circle (2018) for her book of poems The Carrying.
To give you a taste of her style, here are the last lines of her poem, Sanctuary, published in the Virginia Quarterly Review:
“…To be made whole
by being not a witness,
but witnessed.”
Congratulations to Ada Limón for her poetic achievement.

I was so pleased when I read the news. Kudos to her. Her poem “The Leash” from her collection The Carrying, featured on my Poetry Corner March 2019, remains among my Top Ten most read blog posts.

It’s probably unsurprising that as a Brit, I’d not heard of her. But I’ll look her work out – now!

Another excerpt:
ADAPTATION
… Nights when the moon
was wide like the great eye of a universal
beast coming close for a kill, it was a cave
of bitten bones and snake skins, eggshell dust,
and charred scraps of a frozen-over flame.
