Reader Poll: Mexico

I’m interested in your opinions and experiences. Mexico has rich cultures, foods and music; which do you like? Let’s talk.

Do you like Mexican food? Which is your favorite dish?

My answer: Yes, I do. I love chicken mole, chicken with a rich chocolate, tomato and nut sauce. I like tamales a lot. A tamal is made of corn, often with meat and chiles added, and cooked in corn husks. I love cajeta, goat’s milk caramel, and flan.

Have you visited Mexico? Where did you go? Or where might you like to visit?

My answer: Yes, I traveled to Mexico City, Mérida, Piedras Negras and Cozumel. In Mexico City I saw Diego Rivera murals, el Zócalo and Chapultepec Park. I’d like to visit Oaxaca to see the traditional handicrafts and taste their special mole sauces.

If you could go to one show on a trip to Mexico, would you see:

  • Folkloric Dancers
  • Ranchera Music
  • Light show at Maya pyramids

My answer: I would have trouble choosing between the dancers and the light show. I think the dancers would win my vote. I love the regional costumes, music and pair dances.

What kind of vacation do you prefer?

  • On the beach with a book
  • Exploring Maya pyramids
  • Scuba diving in cenote water caves

My answer: I am very interested in Maya pyramids, art, and history. I saw the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon in Teotihuacan outside Mexico City and climbed to the top of them for the vista. I also went on a tour from Mérida that included Uxmal and Chichen Itzá. I’m interested in visiting Palenque in Chiapas one day.

Which do you choose? Gracias for your comments. ¡Olé! –Rebecca

  1. I don’t know if I have ever eaten “real” Mexican food. I do like hot dishes and always buy canned tomatoes with chili and peppers.

I have never been to Mexico but do live close.

I was not familiar with the term Ranchera Music. So I listened to a youtube and liked it.

I can read a book anywhere so will choose the pyramids for a vacation.

I always love the colorful costumes of the dancers.

    1. Thank you for your replies! Mexican food is a spectrum, isn’t it? In the US, most of us eat “Tex-Mex”, a kind of Mexican inspired hot dish cuisine. Thank goodness for Mexican cuisine that brought us all those yummy ingredients like tomatoes and chiles. Glad you heard Ranchera Music and liked it : ) You and I can visit the pyramids and then watch the dancers. Welcome (Bienvenida), Rebecca

  2. 1. Yes, I like Mexican food. I like fajitas, from what the US calls Mexican food.

    2. No, I haven’t visited Mexico. I want to see the Maya pyramids and see Aztec stuff in the capital.

    3. The light show.

    4. Exploring Maya pyramids. And finding new places to hike.

    1. Thanks for your answers to the queries. Fajitas are yummy with their sizzling hot plate of fixings and hot tortillas for wrapping. The Maya pyramids are very worth seeing, a light show there would be spectacular. Even better, you speak the language and would have an easy time navigating around Mexico! Gracias, Rebecca

  3. I doubt if we get many opportunities to eat authentic Mexican food here in the UK. I’ll have to explore making it myself. I’m very comfortable experimenting with Asian food, but haven’t done much about South and Central America: perhaps because I’ve not met people from that part of the world. I’ve never visited, but If I did, I’d like to see traditional dancing and the pyramids. I’ve a feeling this is a travel gap that may not get plugged at this point in my life.

  4. I’ve been to Mexico, but only the touristy spots of Cabo and Acapulco. So I can’t say for sure if I really did “experience” the country…all the same, I do enjoy the Mexican cuisine in Los Angeles (really good quality), and I’m dying to try mole again, as I don’t remember the taste!

      1. No, I didn’t snorkel in Cabo or Acapulco, but I did go whale watching, which was fun (actually got to see some whales)! Thanks, I’ll be on the lookout for good mole in town. 😉

    1. Yes, Michele, a vacation would be fantastic! You read my mind. Do you have a favorite kind of tacos? Were the seas calm in the bay when you stayed in Mexico? Were there lots of fish? Cozumel is very good for snorkeling. I posted photos last year of our trip there.

  6. I’ll vote for snorkeling in Cozumel.. For my birthday in 1981, we saw the Independence Day performance of The Ballet Folklorico de Mexico at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. We enjoyed Guanajuato, Oaxaca and Monte Alban, and Tulum. And we’ll probably have takeout Mexican food for Navidad.

    1. Great, let’s snorkel there sometime 🙂 I love the Ballet Folklórico, and the Bellas Artes is a beautiful theater. I haven’t been to Monte Albán or Oaxaca. So many Mexican destinations look interesting! You two often order tamales this time of year, if I remember correctly. Feliz Navidad!
