December Poetry Challenge 2022

I believe it was yesterday we wrote our November poems. This month we’ll try a Japanese poetry form; dodoitsu. It is non-rhyming, with a humorous twist. (información en español abajo) Dodoitsu has four lines: 7 syllables, 7 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables. Please write about harvest or nature. You have until December 11 noon CST to place your poem in the comments below or on your website with a link here. Rated G please. Please use the challenge tag: ffpoemapop. Poems and translations into Spanish or English will be published December 13.

Era ayer que escribimos los poemas de noviembre, parece. Este mes intentaremos otra forma poética japonesa; dodoitsu. No rima, y tiene un desenlace cómico. Dodoitsu tiene cuatro líneas: 7 sílabas, 7 sílabas, 7 sílabas, 5 sílabas. Escribe sobre la cosecha o la naturaleza. Tienes hasta el 11 diciembre para colocar tu poema en los comentarios abajo o en tu sitio web con un enlace. Para todas las audiencias. Black walnut seeds in the ground
Crabapple branches picked clean
Porch pumpkins, diving for seeds
Well rounded squirrels.

  3. Oooh, that’s learn me to jump the gun. I was polishing a poem about Christmas baking, which won’t fool anyone into thinking it’s about harvest or nature. Back to the quill and parchment I go!

    Yet somehow it is filled with such splendor warmth from God,
    Shadows of furry animals kept themselves hidden from sight,
    Icy cold breath makes it more delicate.

    1. Thanks for participating in the poetry challenge. Your poem is four lines like a dodoitsu. That’s a great start. The lines are longer than the 7, 7, 7, and 5 lines prescribed for the form. Here is an example of your theme in that form:
      Such dull December’s Winter (7)
      Yet filled with God’s splendor warmth (7)
      Furry animals hidden (7)
      Delicate cold breath (5)
      Your words edited to fit the syllables 🙂

  10. Well, I’m not doing well with this dodoitsu. As you know, my first attempt was off the mark. Then I wrote another, and discovered – aaagh! – that it was one line too long. Back to the drawing board. Well, here we are again. I feel that none of my efforts with Japanese forms hit the mark of chiming with the Japanese poetic mood, which always seems quite wistful to me. Yes, I’ve obeyed the rules – but not really got a poem the Japanese would recognise as being in their own tradition. I’ve felt this with every poem I’ve attempted following their traditional forms. Still, gotta give everything a ty!

    Harvest’s over, fields are bare.
    At the margins, harvest’s here –
    Berries black and white and red.
    Feasts for birds. Yipee!

    2. Haha! I’ve written to Those Whom it May Concern telling them that I’m posting nothing at all till after Christmas. A DPD driver s told a friend yesterday that there were 200,000 parcels awaiting delivery in his main regional office! Unlike you, I haven’t even started buying yet. Why change the habits of a lifetime?
