One full week without a single splay of words, excuse or explanation…
Did we move to Pluto, but with its step down in planetary status, internet connectivity went as well…
No, we were on spring break in Minnesota visiting “Eagle’s” grandparents. They generously took us to the cabin! And it snowed for four straight days.
Beautiful.
I became more ill each day; sleeping, not eating, feverish.
I went to the hospital on Wednesday thanks to my mother’s constant urging.
The doctors spent two days tracking down what pathology assailed me. Finally, one afternoon the doctor sat with me and said, “I have a question, it may be absurd, Have you had a tick bite recently?”
Yes, I have.
Really, in March?
Yes, last week after hiking in Governor Dodge State Park.
Then we’ve got it. It was all there in the platelets. It’s Ehrlichiosis.
Would you spell that for me? …
He prescribed a cycle of doxycycline antibiotics that I’ll take for ten days
That’s the mini noticias,
Missed you!
¡Olé! –Rebecca
Get well soon! Feliz Pascoa 🤗🐰🐣🩷

That snow looks so cold! Sounds like a nice visit except for getting ill. Glad you went to the Dr. and they could know what it was and get you the antibiotics quickly. Feel better soon! 🙂

Spending three days in the hospital where they had no food on the menu I could eat beyond brown rice was very trying. Thanks for your well wishes.

Oh Rebecca! My first thought was that snowing during spring break was bad. But tick bite illness! I hope you are feeling better by now!

Hope you feel better soon, Rebecca. You have many spring and summer hikes ahead. (With higher socks? Bug spray? How does one prevent tick bites?) Smart doctor you have. 🙂

Thanks, Susan. Tick prevention: long socks over the trousers. DEET spray. Tick checks as soon as you get home.

Thanks, Wynne. Yes, it was central to my recovery. Are there ticks in the northwest?

There are ticks but I don’t know if it’s the places I go (like up in the snowfields on Mt. Rainier) or if they aren’t that plentiful because I haven’t seen a tick bite since I was a kid. Fingers crossed it stays that way. And that you are back to 100%!

Oh dear Rebecca- that’s unfortunate. You have certainly been missed! Hopefully you will be clear of it soon.
My youngest is a magnet for all biting insects and so his family and friends are now used to helping him find tick bites. He always wears insect repellent and tucks in clothing- but he just tastes so good!

Thanks, Kim. I’m on Day 4 of antibiotics which are doing a great job of crushing it. Yes, my husband has the same trouble with bugs! Won’t buzz off.

Mind you, having your husband or my son on a hike means that most bugs go for them and you and I don’t have to worry too much! Pity it didn’t work for you this time. 😉

Ehrlichiosis? Hmm. I asked my MD daughter. She nodded. A tough one, but you should be all right with the antibiotics. 🙏🏻

Oh my goodness, Rebecca! I didn’t realize I’d neglected WordPress for so many days. I’m just now seeing this. I’m so sorry you got sick! I contracted Lyme Disease back in the 1980s, so I know how insidious those ticks can be! It’s too bad you got sick while on your trip. I hope you are feeling better now and won’t have any lasting ill effects.

Thanks for your note, Janet. So sorry to hear you had Lyme’s disease! My whole nuclear family has contracted it in the last 20 years, in Northern MN. A couple had long term Lymes, unfortunately. Hope you have healed from it. I will be glad to finish the round of antibiotics and get back to my daily walks.

I had achy joints for years and years… and they said mine was a mind case. Misdiagnosed as Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (for which NC sadly leads the nation in cases, or at least used to). It was 21 days later that the bull’s eye rash appeared on my neck. I was living in Charlotte at the time. Since there had never been a reported case in Mecklenburg County, the doctors and everyone pretty much dismissed me. I had to chuckle/cringe six or so years later when the headline in The Charlotte Observer was, “First Case of Lyme Disease in Mecklenburg County.” I was very sick and weak for weeks. I almost lost my job because Human Resources said it didn’t take people “that long” to get over Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Finally, to keep my job, I drove into work one morning and literally collapsed in a chair just inside the door. The office manager said, “Wow, you really are sick! You need to go home.” I said, “I’ll be glad to as soon as I’m able.”

So sorry you were misdiagnosed with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever! Sounds like you weren’t alone in that either. Glad your boss finally “got” it!

I’m sorry, Rebecca. It’s an issue I’m having on a lot of people’s blogs… not just yours by any means. It did work just now, though. I didn’t have a clue what to do about it. Since it was happening on many blogs, I figured it was a problem with my computer or my WordPress account. It is gorgeous and very spring-like here today. I’m watching for the hummingbirds to arrive any day now.

I’ve just changed my password. That may have helped. My rule of thumb is to change it every month, helps dissuade the hackers from getting a toehold on my site. How exciting to be awaiting hummingbirds; those iridescent garden sprites.
