I remember as I took two steps off the path, that I was conscious of taking a risk. There I joked with myself, “the shot’s not worth it, Rebecca. In two weeks, you’re going to be telling yourself that the shot was not worth it.” I clicked the photo and got back on the path. Then I forgot about it like it had never happened. I didn’t check my shoes or pants for ticks. I didn’t do a tick check at home either.
Now, all that’s left is for me to forgive myself, eat and sleep well, and resolve to check for ticks after every hike this summer…
This post is part of Six Word Saturday.

The critical moment …. I remember hubby scolding me last summer for stepping off the path to pick a blackberry … Covid overshadowed tick bites, but it seems the ticks didn’t go away …

Thanks, CDL. I think we’ll hear a lot about ticks this year!

In the moment, you don’t think that it would happen to you, until it actually happens later. It happens to most of us, and it’s a matter of forgiving yourself and to recover from it. I hope you get well soon!

I hope you are getting better and that the tick bite will become just a memory. Lesson learned. And thanks to your story, your readers will do a tick check too in furture!

Thanks, Britta. Would make me very happy to be a cautionary tale, so as to aid others from making the same mistake.

Oh My Goodness! So sorry to hear about this, Rebecca. We have a big tick problem here in Massachusetts, and, even though it’s a pain, I wear those velcro on mesh shin tick protectors if I go even a little off the trail.
Sigh….
It was a good pic, though!
Cheers,
Julie

A lesson and reminder for your readers, so thank you for that, Rebecca. However, I’d rather it not have happened to you. 🌻

Thanks, Michele. I’d rather it wouldn’t happen to anyone but possums who think ticks are tasty snacks!!

Thank you, Rupali. I’m generally for wandering and exploring life. But in tick country, it’s best to stick to the paths. : )

Nothing to forgive. Until you’ve had a tick incident, you don’t realise just what a disproportionate amount if damage they can cause. I hope you’re pretty much over it now?

Thanks, Sadje. It was. But I guess it was a good cautionary tale before Eagle’s big camping trip.

It is a sad world when one has to think twice about stepping out of the path. Literally…
(I hope you are better)

Beets? fermented? Hmmm. Never had those…

I think it may be a Midwestern Polish or German tradition.

Polish maybe? I understand eastern Europe eats lots of beets. We had lunch at a Ukrainian (Slava Ukrainy) restaurant in new York last year, they had beets every other way on the menu… 😉
